  • Significantly increased in volume thyroid gland with hyperplastic units of different size, each of them delimited by connective tissue bands.
  • Color and consistency of the nodules varies depending on the secondary changes in them.

The latter can be:
- Cystic – bright brown filled with jelly-like colloid;
- Dark brown to black in cases with hemorrhages;
- Whitish and very dense in cartilage and bone metaplastic changes and  dystrophic calcification.
