  • In stage of ‘gray hepatization’ alveoli in all visible areas are filled with  fibrin and leukocytes.
  • Because of  the artificial phenomenon of fibrin ‘retraction’ in histological specimen, the pale border delimiting the exudate from the alveolar wall is pathognomonic .
  • Fibrin fibrils are twisted like braids and pass in adjacent alveoli through the pores of Cohn.
