Hodgkin’s disease

  • Normal structure of lymph node is effaced by tumor cell proliferation and reactive inflammatory cells, the same seen in granulation tissue : lymphocytes, plasma cells, macrophages, eosinophilic and neutrophilic leukocytes, fibroblasts.
  • Moderate capillarization, areas of necrosis and fibrosis.
  • Typical tumor cells are the large single nucleated cells of Hodgkin with oval vesicular nuclei with central nucleolus and  their derivatives – the pathognomonic multinucleated Sternberg giant cells : bilobed nucleus («mirror image» – as separated bean grain) and lacunar ( with oval nuclei, one over the other as ‘coins on a plate’, with retraction of cytoplasm ).
  • ØThe lymph node capsule is fibrotic, thickened and infiltrated.
