Atherosclerosis of aorta
- At the centre of atherosclerotic plaque ( light central area ): chaotically placed spindle-shaped in optically ‘empty’ spaces where are located ‘needle’-like cholesterol crystals. Such is the picture in deparaffinized alcohol fixed tissues.
- Sudan ІІІ is used to prove lipids during formalin fixation of tissue and cutting with freezing microtome. Lipid deposits are stained in orange.
- Replacing the endothelium and over the fibrous cap (FC) of complicated plaque is the place where mixed thrombus can be formed (MT).
- Media is atrophic (М), and the blue line on the border with lipid deposits is dystrophic calcification .
